Antics of Ladybug Amphipods. Tiny. Incredible. New DiveFilm HD Podcast

The latest episode of DiveFilm HD Video Podcast offers a fascinating glimpse of the amazingly tiny world of Ladybug amphipods (Cyproidea sp.) by macro master Mike Elliott. "I use a custom tripod on nearly all shots. Some with a mono-pod, some with a bi-pod. Shooting against a wall is the most challenging and allows for only two legs, sometimes only one to steady the shot. Even then it's really tough," notes Elliott. "The one difficulty is that the ladybugs always seem to be looking away from the camera. A minimum +2 diopter is needed to get even close. Huge patience, the best buoyancy you can muster, a steady rig, lots of light, and and HD camcorder with diopter."

Mike and underwater photographer Jody Elliott design and manufacture a number of accessories for underwater imagers through their company Xit404. They developed the custom tripod used for some of this video. For more information on Mike Elliott, check out his profile here at UnderwaterVideography.com, his website MuckDiver.com, and Mike and Jody's company website Xit404.
"Forests and Rivers" New DiveFilm HD Video Podcast Episode

A graceful bat ray, a diving bird and ethereal light are all part of diving in a California kelp forest with filmmaker Mike Boom. "Much of the big kelp forest footage was shot at Ship Rock on the central east side of Catalina Island and the schooling fish footage at Indian Rock just off Emerald Bay," says Boom, who talks about the story behind this video on his website, Laughing Eel.com. "The cormorant diving was down at a depth of about 60 feet (18 meters), and notice that the bat ray has no barbed tail, which most bat rays do. I suspect it may have broken off using it for defense at some point."
The latest episode of DiveFilm HD Video podcast on iTunes is "Blue Shrimp. Green Shrimp, Red Shrimp" by Monterey, California-based underwater filmmaker Mike Elliott, produced on location from Bali to Komodo, Indonesia while on board the MSV Damai.

When Mike started participating in the annual Digital Shootout (and winning awards with his video creations), he began making video "dailies" with his footage and honed his location editing skills. This short is a good example of what Mike can do with his daily footage editing on a laptop while in the middle of a great dive trip.

We've featured some of Mike's fantastical work in past episodes of DiveFilm HD Video podcasts, including his captivating short on feather duster worms ("WormWorks") and his depiction of the weird world of skeleton shrimp ("Rasta Pasta"). We look forward to more of Mike's great video creations.
